May 4, 2005 - Vol 8, No 18
The weekly guide to Doctor Who broadcasts worldwide.

Dalek wins in ratings. A clipped Confidential. CBC stories. No
Destiny for Daleks in Australia.
Saturday 7 May:
BBC One - 7PM - Doctor Who: The Long Game
BBC Three - 7:45PM + 12:55AM - Doctor Who Confidential: The Dark Side
BBC Three - 12:10AM - Doctor Who: The Long Game
Sunday 8 May:
BBC Three - 7PM - Doctor Who: The Long Game
BBC Three - 7:45PM - Doctor Who Confidential: The Dark Side (15
minutes)
Tuesday 10 May:
CBC - 8PM - Doctor Who: Dalek
Saturday 21 May:
ABC Australia - 7:30PM - Doctor Who: Rose (Australian premiere)
UK Overnight Ratings:
BBC 1 30 April - Doctor Who: Dalek - 7.83 million average viewers
(42.73% share)
BBC 3 30 April 7:45PM - Doctor Who Confidential: The Daleks -
504,051 average viewers (4.1% share)
BBC 3 30 April 12:15AM - Doctor Who: Dalek - 175,740 average viewers
(4.0% share)
BBC 3 30 April 1AM - Doctor Who Confidential: The Daleks - 105,800
average viewers (3.7% share)
BBC 3 1 May - Doctor Who: Dalek - 543,960 average viewers (4.6%
share)
BBC 3 1 May - Doctor Who Confidential: The Daleks - 339,970 average
viewers (2.7% share)
UK Final Ratings:
BBC 1 16 April - Doctor Who: Aliens Of London - 7.63 million viewers
CBC Canada Ratings:
26 April - Doctor Who: Aliens Of London - 849,000 viewers. #2 in
time slot.
Doctor Who continues as a ratings juggernaut for the BBC. The final
numbers for BBC One http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcone 16 April showed that
Aliens Of London pulled ahead of the season finale of Ant and Dec on
ITV http://www.itv.co.uk . The overnights for 30 April showed Dalek
beating Celebrity Wrestling by nearly 5 million viewers and getting
the highest ratings for any show on TV that night. Repeats on BBC
Three http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcthree continued performing well above
the average for that channel. 7 more weekends of joy for the BBC
before the season ends.
The 15 minute edited version of Doctor Who Confidential on Sundays
is here to stay. BBC Three wanted a shorter version so that they
could go to other programming at 8PM. The 15 minute edits will focus
on the new series, largely dropping the footage from the original
series in each episode. If you want to see all 30 minutes of
Confidential, catch one of the two Saturday airings or squint very
hard at the Realplayer version on the Doctor Who website
http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho .
BBC One, BBC Two, BBC Four, and BBC News 24 were seen by viewers
around the world online last weekend. Due to a technical mistake,
experimental multicast feeds of these channels (available at up to
365kbs) were online most of the weekend. Personally, I learned of
this in time to see part of Dalek on my own computer live with the
UK audience. The level of quality for a live online broadcast was
very impressive. Better - it was a terrific episode. Writer Rob
Shearman, director Joe Ahearne, and the cast excelled themselves.
Noticing the mistake, the feeds were taken off public view Sunday
evening UK time. It's a nice tease for the future of technology.
Canadian alert 1! Did the beginning of World War Three look very
strange to you last night? Like the pre-opening credits cliffhanger
resolution was missing? That's because it was missing. The CBC
omitted it (presumably by accident).
Canadian alert 2! Elections in British Columbia occur on Tuesday 17
May. The CBC station in Vancouver that serves British Columbia and
parts of the Northwest US will air election coverage that evening
instead of the scheduled Doctor Who episode (1-07 The Long Game). It
appears that there are no plans to air the episode at another time
for this part of the country. If you are in the affected part of
Canada and want to politely contact the CBC
http://www.cbc.ca/television to request that the episode airs at
some point, use the following methods. Don't bother any impolite
contacts - those would not help.
Audience Relations: 604-662-6920
Mailing Address:
CBC British Columbia
700 Hamilton Street, PO Box 4600
Vancouver, BC V6B 4A2
Hopefully the CBC will find some solution to enable everyone to see
the episode. If you have access to multiple feeds of the CBC, The
Long Game should air in the rest of the country on 17 May with no
problem.
Addendum. As of this column's publication time the CBC's TV listings
for Vancouver and the US TV Guide http://www.tvguide.com - zip code
98405 Comcast Cable CBUT 99 both show that the CBC in British
Columbia is airing regular programming on the 17th, including Doctor
Who. If those listings are to be believed, the CBC is not airing any
election coverage. Hmm.
ABC Australia http://www.abc.net.au/tv will skip the Dalek story Destiny of the Daleks in its weekday run of the series, going to City of Death on Wednesday 25 May. This is a surprise as the ABC had previously announced a deal to air all the Dalek installments from the Pertwee story Death to the Daleks onwards.
Starz http://www.starz.com and Encore http://www.encoretv.com have
redesigned their web sites in the US. Their combined movie pack no
longer references the 1996 Doctor Who film as a movie they have.
That could be by accident, or the movie could be available for
networks to buy/ignore again. It is not on the schedules of the
Starz or Encore channels for May or June.
Corrections and updates are welcome at thisweekindoctorwho-
